Corel PHOTO-PAINT: The Hidden Gem of the Suite

While CorelDraw gets most of the attention, Corel PHOTO-PAINT 2025 is a full-featured raster image editor that rivals industry heavyweights. Included with every CorelDraw Graphics Suite license, PHOTO-PAINT handles everything from basic photo corrections to advanced compositing and retouching. For designers who primarily work in CorelDraw but occasionally need to edit photographs or create raster-based artwork, PHOTO-PAINT eliminates the need for a separate photo editing subscription.

Interface and Workspace

Corel PHOTO-PAINT 2025 shares a similar interface philosophy with CorelDraw, making it easy to transition between the two applications. The workspace includes familiar elements like the toolbox, Property Bar, dockers, and color palette. However, the tools and options are specifically designed for pixel-based editing rather than vector work.

You can launch PHOTO-PAINT directly from CorelDraw by selecting a bitmap image and clicking Edit Bitmap on the Property Bar. This opens the image in PHOTO-PAINT with a live connection back to CorelDraw, so changes are automatically reflected when you save and return.

Essential Photo Corrections

Most photos benefit from basic corrections before use in a design. PHOTO-PAINT 2025 provides comprehensive adjustment tools:

  • Levels - Adjust the tonal range by setting black point, white point, and midtone values. This is the most fundamental correction for fixing underexposed or washed-out images.
  • Curves - Fine-tune tonal adjustments with precision using a curve graph. You can adjust individual color channels for targeted color correction.
  • White Balance - Correct color casts caused by different lighting conditions. Click on an area that should be neutral gray to auto-correct.
  • Hue/Saturation/Lightness - Adjust overall or channel-specific color properties. Useful for making colors more vivid or creating stylized color effects.
  • Noise Reduction - Remove digital noise from high-ISO photographs while preserving detail.
Always work non-destructively by using adjustment lenses (PHOTO-PAINT's equivalent of adjustment layers) rather than applying corrections directly to the image. This preserves the original pixel data and allows you to modify or remove adjustments later.

Object and Layer System

PHOTO-PAINT uses an object-based layer system. Each layer is called an object, and the Object Manager docker lets you arrange, blend, and organize them. Key object operations include:

OperationDescription
Merge ModesOver 30 blending modes including Multiply, Screen, Overlay, Soft Light, and more
OpacityAdjust transparency of any object from 0 to 100 percent
Object MasksNon-destructive masking to hide or reveal parts of an object
Lens ObjectsNon-destructive adjustment objects that affect layers below
GroupsOrganize related objects into collapsible groups

Selection and Masking Tools

Precise selections are the foundation of professional photo editing. PHOTO-PAINT 2025 offers multiple masking tools for different situations. The Magic Wand Mask selects areas of similar color with adjustable tolerance. The Brush Mask lets you paint selections freehand for organic shapes. The Smart Selection tool uses AI to automatically detect and select objects, people, or background areas with impressive accuracy.

For the most precise selections, combine multiple tools. Start with the Smart Selection to get a rough selection, then refine edges with the Mask Brush tool. The Feather option softens selection edges for natural-looking composites. You can save complex masks as channels for reuse later in the editing process.

Retouching Tools

PHOTO-PAINT 2025 includes professional retouching tools that handle everything from removing blemishes to reconstructing missing image areas:

  1. Clone Tool - Copies pixels from a source area to cover imperfections. Use Alt+Click to set the source point.
  2. Healing Clone - Similar to the Clone tool but blends the cloned pixels with the surrounding area for seamless retouching.
  3. AI Remove Tool - New in 2025, this tool uses artificial intelligence to remove unwanted objects from photos and intelligently fill the area based on surrounding content.
  4. Red Eye Removal - Automatically detects and corrects red-eye in flash photographs.
  5. Dodge and Burn - Lighten or darken specific areas to add dimension and direct the viewer's eye.

Effects and Filters

PHOTO-PAINT 2025 ships with hundreds of effects and filters organized into categories including Blur, Sharpen, Distort, Noise, Artistic, and Creative. Many effects support real-time preview so you can see the result before applying. For non-destructive workflow, apply effects through lens objects rather than directly to the image.

The Camera Effects category is particularly useful for photographers, offering lens flare simulation, depth-of-field blur, film grain, and vignette effects that add professional polish to images. The new AI Enhance filter can upscale low-resolution images, sharpen soft images, and reduce compression artifacts using machine learning algorithms trained on millions of photographs.

Integration with CorelDraw

The seamless integration between PHOTO-PAINT and CorelDraw is one of the suite's greatest strengths. Beyond the Edit Bitmap workflow mentioned earlier, you can drag and drop images between the two applications, copy objects from PHOTO-PAINT and paste them into CorelDraw, and use CorelDraw's bitmap export to send designs to PHOTO-PAINT for raster effects. This tight integration means you never have to leave the Corel ecosystem to accomplish professional results in both vector and raster domains.

I have been sleeping on PHOTO-PAINT for years, using Photoshop instead. After reading this, I tried the AI Remove tool and it works remarkably well. The integration with CorelDraw is so much smoother than switching to a separate application.
